You work hard all year, saving for that special vacation. Travel, though exciting, can be both mentally and physically stressful.
Back pain is one potential vacation spoiler. To avoid back strain or injury, consider the following:
When driving or riding long distances...
- Stop for a stretch break every 1 1/2 hours or so
- stand fully erect and walk around for a few minutes
- gently lean slightly backward from the waist a few times to relieve tension in the low back
To help relieve back discomfort caused by car and/or airline seats...
- fold a towel 1-2 times lengthwise; roll it up jellyroll style about 2 inches in diameter
- place the roll across the center of your back at about the beltline be sure buttocks and shoulders are back against the seat
- Be careful when lifting luggage..use 2 smaller suitcases instead of 1 large one; carry one in each hand to balance the load carrying too many bags (humans are not pack mules) may cause you to lose your footing and/or strain yourself
- lifting luggage out of the trunk can be awkward Position yourself in front of the trunk, bending at the knees and hips while reaching into the trunk; keep feet apart, back erect and bend your knees.
Before you participate in activities you do infrequently:
properly warmup with stretching exercises
don't try to get a year's worth of activity into one week
If you do experience back pain while traveling:
rest and ice can help decrease the pain.
If pain persists, contact a local health care provider.
